Proper palm tree pruning . . .

When the palm trees at Pensacola Beach begin to look a little weather beaten, our telephone rings. We know the proper pruning practices that will keep the palm trees healthier, attract fewer pests, prevent a hazard in the landscape and help the trees live longer.

During recent hurricanes most of the palm trees that were broken or uprooted had been severely pruned with the "hurricane cut." We never use this method; it stresses the palm, weakens the root system and increase the chance of the palm breaking or uprooting during high winds.

We can also stake and reposition palms for aesthetics purposes.

We follow the palm pruning techniques recommended by the University of Florida, Environmental Horticulture Department
