Hurricane Ivan blasted through our area . . .

altering lives, businesses, landscapes and our future. Ivan trampled homes, punctured roofs and ripped up trees from Perdido Key to Jay and Navarre Beach to Century.

Our area was battered from Hurricane Ivan's 130 mph winds, its nearly 48 tornadoes and 15-foot storm surge. It killed 29 people in the panhandle.

Gulf Coast residents have not seen a hurricane as powerful as Ivan since Camille in 1969. In fact, the fearsome Category 3 storm is considered one of the six most powerful hurricanes in recorded history.

Flooding from Hurricane Ivan's rain and storm surges prompted more than a billion dollars in claims, making it the third most costly natural disaster in U.S. history.

Including damage that extended across nine states, the 27,718 flood claims paid to victims of the Category 3 hurricane's rain and 10- to 15-foot storm surges totaled $1.37 billion.

About half those claims were paid to residents of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

Ivan caused $8.49 billion in damage, including flood claims pushing Ivan ahead of Charley as the nation's third-costliest natural disaster.
